5 Signs Your Office Cabling Is the Real Reason Your Network Is Slow

If your office network feels slow, the first call usually goes to the internet provider. In our experience, that’s rarely where the problem actually lives. More often than not, the real bottleneck is sitting inside the walls and ceilings: aging, damaged, or mismatched network cabling that was never built for what your business runs on it today. Here are the five signs we see most often, and what to do about each one.

Sign 1: Your Speeds Don’t Match What You’re Paying For

If you’re paying for a gigabit internet plan and consistently pulling a fraction of that, cabling is one of the first things worth checking, not the ISP.

Network cabling works on a weakest-link principle. A single outdated patch cord or improperly terminated jack anywhere in the path between a device and the switch can cap the entire connection at that cable’s rated speed, no matter how fast your internet plan is or how new your router is. Swap in a Cat6 cable and terminate it into an old Cat5e jack, and the whole run still performs like Cat5e.

Most offices built or wired more than a decade ago are running some mix of Cat5e and Cat6, often without documentation of which is where.

Cat5e vs. Cat6 vs. Cat6a: What’s Probably in Your Walls

Cat6 Up to 10 Gbps on shorter runs, 1 Gbps at the full 100-meter length Everyday office networking, most current builds
Cat6a 10 Gbps sustained at the full 100-meter run New construction, PoE-heavy environments, future growth

If you don’t know which category is running through your building right now, that’s already worth flagging to your IT provider, since it directly affects whether new hardware purchases will actually deliver the speed you’re paying for.

Sign 2: Wired Connections Drop While Wi-Fi Stays Fine

This is one of the clearest tells. If a hardwired desktop or conference room system keeps losing connection, video calls freeze intermittently, or a port works one day and not the next, while Wi-Fi-connected devices nearby stay perfectly stable, the issue almost never sits with your internet service. It points straight at the physical cable or its termination.

Common causes we see on service calls:

  • A crimp at the RJ45 connector done incorrectly or with the wrong wire order
  • A cable pinched under furniture, bent sharply around a corner, or run too close to electrical conduit
  • A cable that’s simply aged past its usable life

Before assuming it’s a bigger problem, swap the patch cable for a known-good one. It costs nothing and takes thirty seconds, and it rules out the simplest cause first.

Sign 3: Certain Rooms or Floors Are Always the Slow Ones

A network-wide ISP issue affects everyone roughly the same. Cabling problems don’t. If the conference room on the third floor has always lagged, or one wing of the office consistently underperforms while the rest is fine, that’s a strong sign the cabling in that specific area is older, damaged, or was installed differently than the rest of the building.

This shows up often in offices that have been renovated or expanded in phases, which describes a lot of the commercial space we work in around Richmond. A building wired in stages over several years rarely has consistent cabling throughout, even though every jack looks the same from the outside.

Sign 4: Cameras, Access Control, or New Wi-Fi Access Points Can’t Keep Up

This one is increasingly common as businesses add security cameras, badge readers, and modern wireless access points, all of which typically draw power over the same cable using Power over Ethernet (PoE). Cabling that was installed for basic desktop connections years ago often wasn’t specified to handle the power and bandwidth these devices need, especially in dense cable bundles where heat and interference become real factors.

If you’ve recently added or are planning to add any of the following, it’s worth having your existing cabling evaluated before the rollout, not after:

  • IP security cameras
  • Badge or key fob access control systems
  • Wi-Fi 6 or newer access points serving a lot of simultaneous users

This is often the exact moment a business realizes the answer to “does my office need new cabling” is yes, because the cabling that worked fine for email and file sharing wasn’t built for always-on, power-hungry devices.

Sign 5: Nobody Can Tell You Where a Cable Actually Goes

Unlabeled, undocumented cabling isn’t just messy; it’s a performance and reliability risk in its own right. When a cable fails, and nobody can identify which jack, room, or device it connects to, a five-minute fix turns into an hours-long hunt through the ceiling or a crowded rack.

Signs this has become a problem in your building:

  • Cables at the patch panel with no labels, or labels that don’t match reality anymore
  • Abandoned cabling left over from a previous office layout or vendor
  • An overcrowded rack where nobody wants to touch anything for fear of unplugging the wrong thing

This is where network cable management stops being a nice-to-have and starts directly affecting how fast problems get solved. A well-organized, clearly labeled rack means a bad cable gets identified and swapped in minutes. A disorganized one means every troubleshooting call takes longer, costs more, and carries a higher risk of taking down something else by accident. Good cable management is also part of what makes proactive IT support actually work, since a technician can’t get ahead of a failing cable they can’t identify.

How to Do a Quick Self-Check Before You Call Anyone

Before scheduling a professional visit, these four steps can help confirm whether cabling is actually the issue:

  1. Swap the suspect cable for a known-good patch cable and retest
  2. Move the same device to a different jack to see if the problem follows the device or stays with the port
  3. Check whether Wi-Fi-only devices in the same area are unaffected while wired devices lag
  4. Note whether the slowdown is building-wide or limited to a specific room or floor

If the problem follows the cable or the jack rather than the device, that’s a strong signal it’s cabling, not your internet plan or your hardware.

What a Professional Cabling Assessment Actually Involves

A proper assessment goes beyond a visual look at the rack. In general, a structured cabling evaluation typically includes:

  • Identifying which cable categories are actually installed throughout the building, not just what’s documented
  • Testing individual runs for faults like incorrect termination, excess signal loss, or runs that exceed standard length limits
  • Reviewing rack and patch panel organization, since poor labeling is itself a finding worth fixing
  • Confirming whether current cabling can support planned additions like cameras, access control, or new wireless access points

This kind of assessment is also a natural companion to having a network disaster recovery plan in place, since cabling failures are one of the more preventable causes of unplanned downtime.
