In today’s highly advanced and technical workplace, software is perpetually being updated. Software developers and creators and the CEO’s of the companies that own that software are in constant competition with one another. What this translates to for you, and for us your Managed Services Provider, is updates.
Software is always being pushed to have more features, more functionality, and a better user experience. This isn’t always the case, but that’s another discussion. What this means is that until PDF software and Microsoft Windows 10 or QuickBooks (or any other software integral to your business) starts updating through the air like a Tesla, it requires some interaction.
What that means for you is that you need to save work at least daily before you leave for the day. As an MSP, we try to mitigate this as much as possible to our clients with updates that we control; for instance version updates to anti-virus software and the like. In an ideal world, our software would receive the update, install it and make it functional behind the scenes without ever interrupting workflow. It’s 2020, but most software still isn’t that advanced, unfortunately.
“Save early, save often” isn’t just a mantra to address spontaneous updates, but it can also prevent data loss in the event of power outages, power surges and other electricity-related events. In the event that a random update does occur during regular working hours (8am-6pm), we do our best to find out why that occurred and doesn’t recur, and this should be rare.
Bastionpoint works diligently to try to keep your working hours as interruption-free as possible, but after hours, especially if your computer stays at the office, it’s likely that updates may occur at some point. If you do experience data loss (for example; you had a letter or spreadsheet that was painstakingly worked on for hours that was lost due to a restart after hours), it may be able to be recovered, but that can detract from productivity. The best defense against this is to save and close before leaving work for the day.
If you find that something is missing, whether or not it’s related to a restart of your computer, please call our support line and a technician will immediately do everything possible to recover it.
