What Should Keep Operations Leaders Up at Night About Cybersecurity?
October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, but from an operations perspective, cybersecurity is something I think about all year long.
As COO of Bastionpoint Technology, I spend a lot of my time thinking about risk, process, people, accountability, and what happens when something doesn’t go according to plan. Cybersecurity touches every one of those areas.
For an operations director, COO, or business owner, the biggest cybersecurity concern shouldn’t simply be, “Can someone hack us?”
What could happen tomorrow that prevents our people from doing their jobs?
That is what should keep operations leaders up at night.
What Happens If Your Email Stops Working?
Email is still at the center of most businesses. It is where:
- Invoices are exchanged
- Passwords are reset
- Documents are shared
- Vendors communicate
- Employees make decisions
A compromised email account can quickly become much more than an IT problem. It can become a financial, operational, and reputational problem.
For our customers, we focus heavily on securing Microsoft 365 environments with layered email protection, multifactor authentication, monitoring, backup, and security policies designed to reduce the chances that one bad click becomes a major event.
What Happens If One Employee Makes a Mistake?
Most cybersecurity incidents do not begin with some dramatic hacker sitting in a dark room.
They often begin with something very normal:
- An employee receives an email.
- Someone clicks a link.
- A password gets reused.
- A fake invoice looks legitimate.
- A request appears to come from an executive.
Your employees should absolutely receive cybersecurity training, but your entire security strategy cannot depend on every employee making the right decision every single time. (We cover the people side in more depth in Cybersecurity Starts With People and our guide to employee cybersecurity risk.)
Our approach at Bastionpoint is to build layers around the user. These all work together so one mistake does not automatically become a disaster:
- Security controls
- Endpoint protection
- Managed detection and response
- Email filtering
- Least-privilege access
- Monitoring
- Good policies
What Happens If Your Systems Go Down?
Operations leaders live in the world of uptime.
If your systems are unavailable, employees cannot work, customers cannot be served, and revenue can stop almost immediately.
That is why these matter:
- Backups
- Redundancy
- Internet failover
- Properly managed firewalls
- Network infrastructure
- Documentation
- Disaster recovery planning
The question is not simply whether you have a backup. It is whether that backup works when you actually need it.
Do You Know What Is Happening Inside Your Network?
One of the things that concerns me most when we begin working with a new organization is how often nobody really has the full picture.
- Old computers are still connected.
- Former employees still have access.
- Network equipment has not been updated.
- Security products were installed years ago, but nobody is actively monitoring them.
From an operational standpoint, you cannot manage what you cannot see.
That is why we spend time understanding the entire environment, from workstations and Microsoft 365 to firewalls, wireless networks, backups, security tools, vendors, and physical infrastructure.
Our job is not just to fix what breaks. It is to help customers understand what they have, where the risks are, and what needs to happen next.
Cybersecurity Is Really About Business Continuity
Cybersecurity can sound complicated because the technology behind it often is. But the operational goal is actually very simple:
- Keep your employees working.
- Keep your customers protected.
- Protect the data your business depends on.
- Reduce unnecessary risk.
- Have a plan when something inevitably goes wrong.
That is how we approach cybersecurity at Bastionpoint Technology. (For leaders who want an outside framework, CISA’s Cyber Essentials and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework are both written with business leaders in mind.)
We believe technology should support the business, not become another thing an operations leader has to worry about every night.
